"Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, an agonising civil war is drawing to a close, putting an end to the reign of the satrap, Muammar Gaddafi, who was a great friend of Prime Minister Berlusconi and Mr Aznar. From our European perspective, we want the Libyan people to be able to live in peace, freedom and democracy. Many foreign workers have helped and continue to help bring about prosperity in Libya. The war has shattered the lives of many who were forced to flee. Tunisians and Egyptians have received thousands of refugees. In line with what the Commissioner said, I call on all the countries of Europe, and on Spain in particular, on behalf of the whole political spectrum represented here – Ms Guillaume, Mr Moraes, Mr Papanikolaou, Mr Tavares, Ms Matias and the whole political spectrum – to show the generosity and openness needed to receive those refugees. As Mr Moraes mentioned earlier, Norway has offered to take in an extra 250 refugees, a number that almost equals that of the entire European Union put together. Ladies and gentlemen, we have given enough patronising lectures on freedom to the eager youth of the so-called Arab spring; we must show some responsibility."@en1
