"I voted for this motion for a resolution because respect for, and the promotion and guarantee of the universality of human rights are an integral part of the European Union’s
and form one of the foundations of its unity and integrity. In spite of this, numerous human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity occur every day in both the EU and third countries.
I think that the European Union and its Member States must ensure respect for human rights in their own policies and practices in order to reinforce the spirit of freedom and democracy permanently. We need an open dialogue about human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity among all UN member states in every region to be able to get rid of discrimination and promote tolerance and respect everywhere.
Last but not least, I support the call made to the Commission, featuring in the motion for a resolution, for a comprehensive road map to be produced against homophobia, transphobia and discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity as soon as possible."@en1
