"Madam President, the key for this debate is the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Law of the Sea does not suit Turkey. To the detriment of all Cypriots – Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots alike – Turkey is trying to serve her own interests and not the interests of the Cypriots, with threats and
devoid of any legal basis. It is the same Turkey that ignores the rules of the European Union. Yesterday, it was the extension of the Ankara Protocol; today, it threatens to freeze its relations with the EU during the Cypriot Presidency. Turkey abides by no rule.
I subscribe, Commissioner, to your call for a successful outcome of the talks for a settlement, but I urge you to study the statement by Mr Erdoğan in Cyprus that leaves no room for Mr Eroğlu to have a conciliatory stance. The drilling will not affect the talks unless somebody is looking for an excuse. Turkey should not be encouraged, Mr Watson, by your saying that you are not surprised by it behaving like a bully."@en1
