"In terms of transport safety, a number of successes were achieved in Europe in recent years, although the target of halving the number of annual road traffic fatalities has not been met. A series of measures are being implemented in an attempt to achieve this self-imposed target. However, these are quite vague and it is doubtful whether they will enable the number of road traffic fatalities to be reduced as desired. It is also important to gather more comparable data in relation to the causes of accidents and injuries for the purposes of better coordination between the Member States. In addition, we should also be clear about the role played in serious traffic accidents by heavy goods vehicles, which are becoming increasingly dangerous, particularly in view of increasing competitive pressures, and about the fact that scrap vehicles are still to be found on Europe’s roads. Of course it would be a good thing for the public to attend regular first aid courses. However this should not be made mandatory for road users. For this reason, I have voted against."@en1
