"Madam President, last week the European Union abandoned, I hope only for a short time, one of the basic principles on which it is founded: equality among its members.
The JHA Council left the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area in abeyance, even though both states have met all the technical criteria, according to the experts. I feel that the refusal by a Dutch minister to keep a promise made by the EU through the accession treaties has gone too far. This has happened just when I think that the Dutch public has confidence in Romania, as Dutch investors are top of the league in my country, with subscribed capital amounting to EUR 5.37 billion, held in nearly 4 000 majority-controlled companies.
Introducing additional Schengen accession criteria into the debate is extremely unfair and discredits EU integration, especially when the rules adopted by common consent are changed during the game."@en1
