I voted in favour of this report because I am convinced that the participation of citizens in the European Union’s decision-making process is essential, and the opportunity for citizens to submit petitions to the European Parliament is an expression of such participation. In this report, Parliament evaluates the activities of the Committee on Petitions in 2010, indicating that the petitions received last year continued to focus on the environment, fundamental rights, the internal market and justice, and in geographical terms, the largest proportion of petitions referred to specific Member States. In the report, the European Parliament nevertheless finds it regrettable that the Commission has yet to address the Committee on Petitions’ repeated calls to inform the European Parliament of the progress of infringement proceedings relating to open petitions. Parliament also proposes the creation, as a matter of urgency, of a dedicated Web portal for petitions, offering an interactive template for the recording thereof."@en1
