I voted in favour of the Chatzimarkakis report on energy market integrity and transparency because I believe that these are the fundamental principles of any liberal economy which seeks to take due account of its operators’ interests. With this in mind, it is important for prices to reflect a fair interaction between supply and demand. Markets are becoming increasingly interconnected and abuses committed in one Member State could affect wholesale electricity and gas prices even across national borders. I agree with the decision to prohibit the use of inside information to perform manipulated transactions which artificially inflate prices to a level which is not justified by actual availability and production costs. I believe that the monitoring carried out by the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators, the national energy and financial industry regulatory authorities and the competition authorities will prove a suitable and effective means of combating abuses and infringements and that the sanctions to be introduced by the Member States will also be appropriate."@en1
