"Having seen the severe social impact of the current economic and financial crisis, the European Union created the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to provide additional assistance to workers affected by changes in the structure of global trade. This report concerns the proposal for a decision of Parliament and the Council on the mobilisation of the EGF in accordance with point 28 of the Interinstitutional Agreement of 17 May 2006 between the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission on budgetary discipline and sound financial management (application EGF/2010/007 AT/Steiermark and Niederösterreich from Austria). In June 2011, the Commission adopted a new proposal for a decision on the mobilisation of the EGF for Austria in order to support the reintegration into the labour market of workers made redundant due to the global financial and economic crisis, following the application referred to above, which was submitted on 9 March 2010. This is the sixth proposal for the mobilisation of the Fund submitted under the 2011 EU budget, mobilising EUR 8 284 908, and the aim is to mitigate the social impact of the dismissal of 1 180 workers from 54 metals enterprises in the regions of Styria and Lower Austria. I am voting for this assistance in the hope that the Austrian metal industry will recover quickly."@en1
