"On 13 September 2011, voting took place on the situation of women approaching retirement age. The report was adopted by a majority vote. I supported the motion, as I believe that older people are an undervalued source of cultural, professional and social riches. In accordance with the principles of the 2020 strategy, poverty is to be eradicated and employment is to rise to 75%. However, employment amongst women in the 55-64 age group is only 37.8%, while among men in the same age group, it is 54.8%. I think that we should provide training and develop the skills of older women, which will help them find jobs. We should remember that women’s careers are often interrupted or restricted, and that their earnings are much lower than those of men.
In terms of poverty, isolation and social exclusion, women are in a high-risk group, as the length of their working life is much shorter. Women often do not work due to household responsibilities, which is why they lose out later on receiving pension payments. The right changes in the approach to the problem of an ageing population may bring about positive changes in economic and social policy."@en1
