"The presence of European vessels in the South Pacific obliges the European Union, under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to cooperate with other interested parties in the management and conservation of the area’s fishery resources. The Commission has therefore negotiated a convention on a Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (RFMO) in the South Pacific for fishery resources that are not yet covered by an existing RFMO. The aim of this convention is to ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable exploitation of the resources in the South Pacific. The European Union must have a presence in all the RFMOs, both to ensure sustainable fisheries management and to defend the interests of its fishing fleet. Having a presence in the RFMOs will also enable the Union to act as a counterweight to ensure that there are no possible attempts to circumvent efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing."@en1
