lpv:translated text	"Mr President, the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has made us aware of the need for action on raising the level of safety in the offshore industry. In view of the huge number of active installations in Europe, most of which are in the North Sea Basin and where dangerous incidents have also taken place, it is essential to establish consistent principles and legal frameworks to ensure that all offshore activity is both safe and sustainable. Development of a high level of safety in the offshore industry with a focus on protecting people and the environment will increase the confidence of society and will also help increase the Union’s position in efforts to strengthen existing legislation on a global scale. It is in the Union’s interest, too, to step up cooperation with neighbouring countries which also exploit marine deposits, in particular with Mediterranean countries as part of our neighbourhood policy, but also with Norway, Russia and the United States. Establishing common and transparent rules of operation will result in both mutual economic benefits and an increase in safety, and this is why I support the resolution."@en1
