"Madam President, this is a scandalous, tragic, horrible and piteous affair. And again, it is the women who suffer the most.
This area has been described as the rape capital of the world. That is not a soubriquet that its citizens can be proud of, but it is probably true, because there is the rape of natural resources, which is destroying the wealth of the country and continuing the poverty cycle, and then the rape of women and children.
In particular, from 10 to 12 June, 170 women were raped. That is outlandish. The consequences for them, and for the children born as a result, are unbelievable. We therefore have to do everything in our power to try and bring some sense to bear on the situation, and particularly to get the government there to make the fight against rape a national priority, to combat impunity and eventually to bring the perpetrators to justice."@en1
