"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, I voted in favour of the Sommer report because I firmly believe that Europeans should be able to make a free and informed choice about what they eat.
In adopting this report, Parliament is giving the green light to clearer rules on food labelling. These rules concern not only the energy content and the percentage of fat present in the labelled food, but also the obligation to indicate the origin of the meat used.
These are common-sense rules that have the merit of allowing citizens the freedom of choice, so that they can follow a healthy, balanced diet and know what they are eating. This regulation is a vehicle for citizens to be able to voice their specific requirements with regard to their choice of foodstuffs."@en1
