If we continue with this debate for the next few years, then the Americans will decide on the world’s environmental protection, the Chinese will dictate consumer protection and Europeans will have no protections whatsoever. Our job is to work for the people.
I wanted to briefly point out that we also have a number of problems to resolve in the area of the regulation of the financial markets, both in terms of the governance package and in relation to financial services. I look forward to working with you and hope that we Europeans can play a significant role in stabilising the financial markets. We have a particular duty in this regard and I am optimistic that we will succeed admirably under the Polish Presidency."@en1
