"I voted in favour of this joint position on the Eurovignette Directive presented at second reading by the Council and Parliament. The directive’s main objectives are to allow Member States to charge road users for some external costs, in other words, to apply the ‘polluter pays’ principle, and also to give Member States additional possibilities to make their national road charging systems more efficient. I welcome the goals of reducing pollution and implementing the ‘polluter pays’ principle in the area of road transport. I also supported the proposal for revenue obtained from the Eurovignette charge to be earmarked for investment in road infrastructure and to be used to make transport greener. The promotion of sustainable transport is a key element of the common transport policy. To this end, we should reduce the contribution the transport sector makes to climate change and the negative impact of transport, in particular, congestion, which impedes mobility, and air and noise pollution, which damage health and the environment."@en1
