In view of the fact that Japan is only the sixth largest of the European Union’s trade partners, Japan’s potential for cooperation with the EU in the field of trade and investment is still unexploited. The main obstacle making it significantly more difficult for European businesses to gain access to the Japanese market is non-tariff barriers. As a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism, I am sure that the aviation industry is one of the sectors where cooperation on trade and research and development would have mutual benefits for both the European and Japanese economies.
