Member States must adopt a firm joint stance in order to improve the functioning of the European Single Market and prevent the return of economic protectionism, which would result in fragmentation of the internal market and affect competitiveness. The aim of the European Single Market Act is to develop administrative cooperation between Member States, also by means of expanding the role of regional authorities with a view to establishing coordination at their level. Unfortunately, it is relatively difficult to register such programmes at regional level as a result of the economic disparities between EU regions. In order to revitalise the less developed regions, we need to focus on human capital. The region’s prosperity is determined firstly by the productivity of its inhabitants and their skills, in addition to the level of capital investment and their innovative capacity. However, there are major differences even between regions in the same Member State.
I think that adapting the European Single Market to the needs of European citizens is achieved primarily through improving worker mobility. The free movement of labour can make a significant contribution to narrowing the disparities between regions. Another key aspect is the provision of ongoing education and training for workers. Specialist workers and those who have retrained for another career can meet the market’s specific needs much more easily, thanks to their high level of mobility."@en1
