"I voted in favour of Mrs Mathieu’s proposal for a directive on the single application procedure for a residence and work permit for third-country nationals. I did so because I think it is important for Europe to equip itself with EU-wide rules to manage the influx of manpower from third countries, both for economic and social reasons. Labour immigration can increase the competitiveness and the vitality of the economy, helping Europe to tackle the future demographic challenge as well as possible. The proposal for a directive calls on the Member States to adopt flexible immigration policies to support the long-term development of the Union. In addition, it will simplify the often complex administrative procedures for receiving migrant workers, while also providing a tool to combat the exploitation and discrimination imposed on some categories of workers."@en1
