"It is very important for the EU’s Generalised System of Preferences to become more transparent. It is important for the EU’s tariff preferences for imports from third countries to be based on democracy and ethics, and not simply the pursuit of profit. Tariff preferences should be beneficial to the whole of society and not just a certain number of companies. The rapporteur accurately observed that the proposal to extend the current regulation is not ideal, but it would allow us to avoid a legal vacuum lasting more than six months. Under the current regulation, the European Parliament has no say on the criteria for eligibility, or on the list of the beneficiary countries. This should change: The time has come for Parliament to make use of its new post-Lisbon powers in the trade arena. The EU should pay more attention to the development of cooperation with neighbouring countries in the area of trade policy. This would help establish a stable and liberal business environment and would facilitate the gradual enlargement of the European single market. It is in the EU’s interests to sign a free trade agreement with Ukraine and begin negotiations with other Eastern Partnership countries which are members of the World Trade Organisation – Georgia, Moldova and Armenia."@en1
