"I voted in favour of the report on the guidelines for the 2012 budget procedure because I think that the current economic crisis – which right now has repercussions on employment above anything else – requires a joint effort on cutting back from the Member States and the European institutions. I therefore agree with the statement that in the current circumstances, the general principle for European financing is to follow an ethos of budgetary austerity.
In any case, I feel that I must emphasise how, even in view of the economic situation, the Union’s budget and, in particular, Parliament’s budget – as the only European institution directly elected by citizens – should primarily take care to promote and bring citizens closer to the European Union, particularly at times like these when the future is so uncertain. In particular, I think it would be a particularly good idea to consider a better distribution of Parliament’s information offices in the Member States and their more strategic location, partly in the light of the latest upheavals in neighbouring States."@en1
