"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the report by Mrs Járóka takes on particular importance at this time and – together with the communication that the Commission is on the brink of adopting – will constitute the basis for further discussions at the European Roma Platform, scheduled to take place in Budapest on 7 and 8 April
I support the call for the introduction of binding minimum standards across the European Union in the education, employment, housing and health sectors. In particular, I think greater attention should be paid to primary education, which is crucial for the full integration of the Roma minority.
The firm appeal made by France, Romania, Bulgaria and Finland to the European Commission is certainly to be welcomed. The Commission does, however, need to take greater responsibility for an active, strategic and leading role in developing the implementation of an effective Roma inclusion strategy. The need to identify specific duties that the nomadic communities must assume is clear."@en1
