"Madam President, one of the decisive factors affecting industrial growth in the European Union is the trend towards a ‘green economy’. This is good news. However, the way in which the current EU regulations operate is blind and arbitrary, resulting in the opposite effect, or, in other words, limiting our progress towards this goal. The European copper industry has become an example of such an adverse impact. There can be no question about the fact that both the Climate and Energy Package and the benchmarks directive will cause a drop in the production of copper, which, as we all know, is a metal which is in great demand for innovative and energy-efficient technologies, particularly in relation to electricity transmission and heat transfer in heat exchangers. I would like to ask the Commissioner whether it is not time – while we still have time – at least to revise certain aspects of these regulations, and to stop these destructive measures?"@en1
