"Agricultural products are an essential part of international trade and must therefore be treated as such. Therefore, there is no doubt that the constant increase in food prices as a result of increased commodity prices is an increasingly pressing concern for the EU. On the other hand, the agricultural sector also has to satisfy the food needs of an increasingly large number of people, despite being faced with increasingly limited natural resources and high prices of the factors of production; to this can be added concerns relating to the environment and conservation of natural resources, which can lead to distortions of competition, mainly in developed countries. In view of future needs, there is no doubt that agriculture will become a strategic sector – I would even say a crucial sector – for the economic development of the EU and the whole world."@en1
