The report drafted by Ria Oomen-Ruijten on the Green Paper entitled ‘Towards adequate, sustainable and safe European pension systems’ makes an important contribution to the debate on the future of European pension systems. I think that Member States need to draft provisions for ensuring adequate pensions for their citizens. We encourage Member States to set up the most adequate pension system to guarantee a decent standard of living for everyone, with particular attention being focused on the most vulnerable groups in society. I voted for point 24, which calls on Member States to encourage older people to continue working through fiscal and social security exemptions.
I also voted to encourage and facilitate combining work with retirement and to put in place dissuasive measures so that companies find it harder to make older people redundant.
I voted against raising the retirement age because I think that people who pass a certain age, but who will and can work, should be encouraged and not forced to work, especially at a time when the unemployment rate in the EU-27 is 10%, and 20% among young people."@en1
