I believe, however, that it is essential to ensure respect for the interests and specific needs of banana producers in the outermost regions, in particular by increasing the funds available to the Programme of Options Specifically Relating to Remoteness and Insularity (POSEI). The situation in the European Union is very special, since bananas are the world’s fourth most important crop and there is only a limited number of banana-producing countries.
