"As Chair of the European Alliance against Alzheimer’s disease, I can only welcome the measures recommended by this European initiative, which seeks to improve epidemiological knowledge about the disease and to coordinate current research. Joint research programmes have been set up thanks to European support, and I hope that they will bear fruit. In the meantime, it is essential to place prevention at the heart of any strategy and to direct our efforts towards obtaining the earliest possible diagnosis, as is highlighted in the report. The Member States should all take action immediately, including through prevention campaigns based on an ambitious European plan for combating the disease. Behavioural or personality changes caused by the disease mean that sufferers become gradually more dependent on others. Patients are not the only ones who suffer from this disease; their families and their carers suffer too. Furthermore, I wish to pay tribute to the Alzheimer Europe association which, alongside national associations fighting against the disease, plays a crucial role in helping patients and their families."@en1
