"Anyone who looks at a map of the European Union will quickly realise that the Western Balkans are destined to become part of it. I believe that those countries’ membership will eventually be achieved. Serbia’s route towards it has been particularly difficult since the end of the former Yugoslavia following the collapse of Soviet power. Its involvement as the aggressor in fratricidal wars, and the brutal impact that they have had on neighbouring countries and on the international community as a whole have had serious consequences for the country and its people. The secession of Kosovo, which remains a deeply controversial subject, has heightened tensions in the region and continues to have an immense potential to cause instability. I hope that Serbia persists with opting for the EU, and I must congratulate its people and their leaders for the progress that they have made in this regard."@en1
