"I was pleased to hear the result of today’s vote on the citizens’ initiative. By bringing in the citizens’ initiative, the Treaty of Lisbon has become a legislative tool for the EU’s citizens, but we have to remember that collecting a million signatures does not yet mean that a new law will be made. This process has to go the whole length of the UE legislative route, and we MEPs must make sure that procedures are simplified, to avoid disappointment, here. I think we should run a good information campaign in the Member States about this instrument, so that the issues raised under the EU citizens’ initiative correspond with what is said in the Treaties and are in accord with the EU’s values."@en1
