"The economic and social impact of trade liberalisation varies from one country to another and must be kept in check in most cases. The common commercial policy must be consistent with the European Union’s overall objectives and not merely serve the short-term interests of major economic operators.
I voted for this report as I think that the integration of corporate social responsibility principles into international trade regulations will provide the Union with the opportunity to exert a certain pressure on businesses and on states which sign trade agreements with the European Union to ensure compliance with labour standards. This will allow us to ensure that the external policies we implement will actually contribute to sustainable social and economic development, while businesses will comply with our internationally agreed regulations and values."@en1
