"I voted in favour of the report by Mr Balz, with whom I have had the opportunity of working on this matter within the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. The European Central Bank has played an important and fundamental role during the economic crisis of recent years, and its representatives have often been instrumental in pointing out problems in the euro area. The Member States have not always listened, but the coordination provided by the Frankfurt-based institution can only be regarded in a positive light. The aid package put together and provided to Greece, just like the rapid responses, would not have been possible without an authority and a body such as the ECB. Furthermore, with the recent approval of the package on Europe’s supervisory authorities, the ECB will acquire greater powers and authority to monitor and highlight anomalies in the system. This is essential, just as it is essential for the ECB to maintain its independence and not be under the influence of any Member State."@en1
