"Mr President, Commissioner Damanaki, first of all, I should like to congratulate the Commission for the efforts carried out in Haiti.
However, the situation requires an urgent and much stronger response. We need more resources and a greater international commitment, despite the difficulties involved in mobilising funds in the current economic context. It cannot be that funds are available for some problems but not for this humanitarian situation.
We have a number of health and humanitarian priorities: to inform the population about a specific disease, obtain tents, improve sanitation in all areas and provide access to clean water. All these tasks are urgent and we need a great effort on the part of the Commission and all the Member States."@en1
