"The adopted report touches on an important topic that is nevertheless often overlooked. European citizens are living longer and longer, sometimes extending the ‘third age’ by many years more than in the past. This stage of life is nevertheless all too often seen in negative terms, affected as it is by the preconceptions of a society that ignores the fund of experience of older people and regards ageing as a real burden that transforms active individuals into passive objects. This dangerous phenomenon mainly affects women, who live longer than men on average, and who have been hard hit by the current economic crisis, which has drastically reduced the services dedicated to them. Many are still at risk of poverty and are condemned to living on an inadequate pension. In the interests of all European women, young and old, I hope that today’s vote will go some way toward highlighting their fundamental role in present day society."@en1
