"The Greens did not table amendments to the draft report since we depart from the proposal that we will vote against the Korea FTA as such in the upcoming assent procedure for the reason that we object to a situation in which the EU industrial landscape is being determined arbitrarily by a single FTA. Moreover, we object to the EU negotiated carve-out in the FTA permitting the export to Korea of big gas guzzlers not meeting Korea’s more stringent CO emissions limits and timelines. Additionally, we perceive the EU 2020 strategy to be an attempt to spur an EU-wide industrial policy, which should be accompanied by a temporary moratorium on pending FTAs potentially conflicting with the setting of such policy. However, we support in this situation the formulation of stringent safeguards, and this particular safeguard will become the blueprint for other FTAs. We also supported the rapporteur in resisting a situation in which the Korea safeguard is designed solely in the interests of the automotive industry, and in ensuring consideration of the entire range of trade relations and possible needs for trade defence mechanisms."@en1
