"I voted in favour of the Report on the funding and operation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. For many, European solidarity is an abstract concept, but it is a mechanism which should directly benefit individual European citizens, especially now when they are in a tight spot and a difficult situation.
However, the fund has proven not to be functioning properly and that is why I expect the Commission to take seriously the demand for a mid-term review of the Fund’s operation and a revision of the regulation.
I have a reservation regarding the independence of the Fund; it is related to its unlimited duration. I believe that the Fund is a political response to the current situation and that in the future, the European Union should promote employment through other instruments. It must ensure the competitiveness of the European economy. We must be careful not to establish a mechanism that would play into the hands of those who fail to adapt to changing global circumstances. That is the context in which I cast my vote."@en1
