"In recent years, freight transport has developed considerably. However, this trend is not to be seen in rail transport. Despite extensive efforts of the Union intended to increase the competitiveness of rail transport, we are witnessing a gradual decline in the share of the rail market in freight transport. For more than 30 years (1970-2005), a 10% reduction has been noted. It is, therefore, essential to create an effective, environmentally-friendly and safe system of rail transport which will benefit the citizens as well as businesses, making this form of transport more competitive and reversing the current disadvantageous situation in the market. In order to meet this challenge it is essential to consolidate the supranational cooperation of all Member States. Furthermore, in view of recent events in Europe following the eruption of the volcano in Iceland, which paralysed air traffic, it should be a priority to create a trans-European rail transport network in as short a time as possible. It should also be said that rail transport is safe for the environment, and is faster and does not need such extensive infrastructure as road transport. The opening of European freight transport corridors seems to be a good step towards initiating fruitful international cooperation in the area of rail transport. I am convinced that this will contribute to the establishment of an efficient European internal transport market. Creation of a competitive supranational system will contribute to an increase in the cohesion of the European Union’s economic development. I would like to state my profound conviction that establishing this system will bring economic, environmental and administrative effects."@en1
