"I voted today in favour of Parliament’s resolution, which was also supported by most of the political groups and which contains Parliament’s conditions for the ratification of the new SWIFT agreement and the start of a new round of negotiations with the US. Parliament’s objective is to lay down flexible rules for promoting transatlantic cooperation which will help to combat terrorism and create a transmission system in which Union citizens can trust. One of the most sensitive points of negotiation, to which particular attention must be paid, is a reduction in the volume of data transmitted. In order to achieve this, the new agreement will need to include a series of guarantees designed to ensure compliance with European legislation which protects the personal data of European citizens. In addition, as stated in the resolution, it is important for EU citizens to be given a better appeal mechanism, so that they can defend their rights more effectively."@en1
