The tragic circumstances of this death should put us all to shame. Especially the political decision makers who, following the lead of Mr Zapatero and Ambassador Moratinos, have changed European policy towards Cuba. All the European Union has achieved with its tentative attempt at appeasement has been to increase the feeling of impunity, whilst making the democrats – who deserved much more from us – feel more isolated. I hope for a return to the firm democratic policy that has only recently softened. I want the European Union to finally acknowledge that this change of policy has been a complete failure.
