"Twenty years after it was signed, the Cooperation Agreement for the Protection of the Coasts and Waters of the North-East Atlantic against Pollution, agreed between Portugal, Spain, France, Morocco and the EU, is now ready to enter into force, following ratification by all the contracting parties. The Council now proposes to conclude, on behalf of the European Union, an additional protocol which will finally allow the agreement to enter into force.
This agreement is of supreme importance to Portugal, bearing in mind the length of its coastline and the importance of the sea for its national economy, and not forgetting the
and
disasters. I therefore congratulate the Council and the Member States on the conclusion of this additional protocol and I hope for the swift and effective entry into force of the agreement as this will provide our coastlines with greater protection against environmental disasters such as those which, unfortunately, have blighted our coasts in the recent past."@en1
