"I welcome the launch of a new strategy aimed at resolving the issues relating to fishing in the European Union. Overfishing, illegal fishing, pollution and climate change are factors which are jeopardising marine ecosystems. This is why the concern for high-quality aquaculture in Europe will yield economic benefits and also ecological benefits at the same time.
It is vital for us to maintain the right balance between economic growth, fishing traditions in certain regional communities and the best fishing practices. The most important thing is for us to realise that the promotion of aquaculture which is sustainable and economically efficient in the long term is primarily dependent on how environmentally friendly we are."@en1
