"Mr President, the question of gender equality faces yet another challenge at the present stage. The progress achieved over recent years in the equality sector by the European Union is in danger of slowing down, or even of reversing, as a result of the current recession.
However, effective gender equality policies can form part of the solution to the problem of how to get out of this crisis, support recovery and strengthen the economy. Consequently, investment in policies that promote equality between men and women must be our basic ambition and must be robustly supported by all of us, even more, even more strongly, in this difficult economic climate."@en1
