"We need to watch out that a debate about terrorism is not narrowed down into a debate about body scanners or data protection. It is striking that, in their statement, the Council and the Commission did not mention the radical Islamism that is still the breeding ground and seedbed for international terrorism. Since we are no longer allowed to see the truth, due to political correctness, every approach is doomed to failure before it even begins. The Commission and Parliament put the emphasis on respecting civil rights, something which is right and necessary, but the danger is that we lose ourselves in formalism and that is what we saw in the debate about the terrorist finance tracking programme. Certain quarters are guilty of whipping up public sentiment against any possible approach to tackle terrorism and that is no way for us to serve the citizens of Europe."@en1
