As a lawyer, I cannot possibly accept the imposition of a reversal of the burden of proof at European level, as proposed in the new anti-discrimination directive. After all, it is nigh on impossible to prove that something is not the case and far easier to prove that something is the case.
It is necessary, however, for the EU to ensure that its fine guiding principles and values, as set out in the EU Treaty, are also experienced by its citizens in practice. Horizontal legislation in this area is therefore to be welcomed. That is why I have voted in favour of the Buitenweg report as a whole."@en1
