"Mr President, I am one of those members of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats who voted for the report. I did so because I think that Parliament must send out a strong signal, with this vote, in favour of non-discrimination, and there are certainly other much more important factors than those that have just been mentioned.
In fact, in the Member States there are situations where children are denied education in their mother tongue, where use of the latter is prohibited. We are a world away from the real situation. It is therefore right to send out a signal, as Parliament has done with my support. There certainly remains much to do in this task of gaining greater awareness of others, and we are far from the dialogue of cultures on which we vowed to make progress in 2008. I regret all of the controversy that has surrounded this report."@en1
