Conscious of the need to dissuade people, and above all young people, in our society from smoking, I have abstained from voting on this report. The EU wants to make cigarettes and fine-cut tobacco intended for the rolling of cigarettes and cigarillos more expensive, but the issue is whether the hypocritical approach of raising taxes is the right way to do this. The tobacco industry does, after all, employ a large number of people within the Member States and, in times of crisis, the impact of any such measures on the employment situation should be thoroughly assessed before they are implemented.
Would it not be better to reduce smoking by educating people rather than by taxing them?"@en1
