"− I do not think there can be any kind of special treatment for Iceland. In the past, we held negotiations with countries which are now Member States of the European Union, and now we are holding negotiations with countries which would like to join the European Union: the approach must be equal – it must be absolutely the same for everybody. The negotiations will be the same as with all other candidate countries. I do not see any possibility of having some kind of fast track for these negotiations. Whether Iceland is, perhaps, quite well prepared for membership is another issue. I do not know to what extent it has already adopted legislation similar to that of the European Union, because this is a major issue. At any rate, I am sure that Member States will be of the opinion that the position must be scrupulously fair and equal for all possible applicants. This is my opinion. There has never been any talk in the Commission of any special treatment or fast track."@en1
