"Mr President, as we know, only half of the CO
emissions are covered by the ETS. I supported this particular report because other sectors need to get involved and share the efforts. I want to focus in particular, though, on agriculture, which has several problems, but I think we need to remember that agriculture is about food production and we need to take that into account in what we are asking this sector to do.
I also think that farmers need to be brought into the information process because system changes are being required of them and they are not being properly briefed or led on this issue. We need greater research – and it is going on in Member States – into how to reduce emissions from agriculture with the cooperation of farmers. I would, however, just give a warning that whatever we do in the European Union, it should not lead to a reduction in our food production, because that space will be filled by imports, over whose emissions we have little control."@en1
