".
The leaders of the European Union are not accepting the popular vote in the only referendum that it was possible to hold – because it was required by their own national constitution – on the draft Treaty of Lisbon in which the people repeated the NO decision that the peoples of France and the Netherlands had already made regarding the European Constitution. Once again, in an attitude that is anti-democratic and shows a complete disregard for the voting of the citizens, we see the return of pressure and blackmail to attempt to force Ireland to hold a new referendum or – even worse – to change its own national constitution to avoid referenda and the popular vote. We reaffirm our most strident protests against this position.
These policies must be scrapped as a matter of urgency. We want a new direction for Portugal and for Europe that prioritises people, the improvement of collective well-being and respect for the dignity of those who produce wealth. This new direction must reject what President Sarkozy calls recasting capitalism and must say no to the policy of Economic and Monetary Union, along with the associated Stability Pact and false autonomy of the European Central Bank (ECB). This will not happen under the socalled ‘European Economic Recovery Plan’."@en1
