"The effects of natural disasters are varied and generally devastating. Alongside the human suffering that they cause, it is above all the economic effects which set the development of these countries back by many years, as in the current case. Essential infrastructure is destroyed and can only be rebuilt with great difficulty using the countries’ own funds.
The establishment of the Solidarity Fund that has been advocated should speed up reconstruction work of this kind by providing selective financial support, which will also require careful monitoring in each location. It is true that the affected regions need rapid assistance, but reliable monitoring of the investments in these projects is also important. In my opinion, more attention should be given to this area, which is why I am abstaining from the vote on this report."@en1
