"The European Parliament has just given its assent to the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement signed by the European Community in 2006. Having fishing interests in the area because of La RĂ©union, the Community was obliged to cooperate with the other parties involved in the management and conservation of resources in the region under the terms of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
This new regional fisheries organisation establishes a specific institutional framework with, as its cornerstone, the permanent Scientific Committee, whose main task is to conduct a scientific assessment of the fishery resources and the impact of fishing on the marine environment, taking into account the environmental characteristics of the area. The Agreement also encourages cooperation in the field of scientific research.
On the basis of these scientific recommendations, the parties will be in a strong position to draw up conservation and management measures that are best able to meet the challenges facing the area. The Agreement marks a genuine step forward in promoting fishery resources and sustainable development."@en1
