"Thank you for the floor, Madam President. Hungarian public opinion witnessed a remarkable manifestation right in the middle of the Georgian crisis. The Russian ambassador to Budapest made a considerably undiplomatic declaration against the leader of the opposition, Viktor Orbán, since Mr Orbán stood up for Georgia. The Russian ambassador – this cannot be described any other way – threatened the Hungarian opposition, and thereby most of Hungarian society, with the malevolence of the Russian state. It is not difficult to decipher the coded message: whoever votes for FIDESZ must face the disapproval of the Russians. His Excellency’s message is undisguised interference in Hungarian internal affairs, and thus in the democratic system of one of the Member States of the European Union. Of course, Hungary is not alone, and nearly all the former Communist states have received similar threats, which threaten the whole of Europe."@en1
